 History

The Incheon Electric Power Plant, located in the Chinatown area of Jung-gu, Incheon, South Korea, is a cultural heritage site with significant historical importance as the country's first electric power plant. Established in 1887 by a Japanese businessman named Nakaguchi Goro, the power plant began supplying electricity to Incheon city in 1899 under a contract with the Korean Empire government, marking the first-ever electric power supply business on the Korean peninsula.

In the 1930s, the plant was acquired by the precursor to the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), known as the Korean Electric Company (KORELEC), and played an important role in the power supply industry. However, with the rapid increase in electricity demand during the 1970s, the plant's generation capacity reached its limit, and the power supply to Incheon city was transferred to other power plants.

Today, the Incheon Electric Power Plant is recognized as a cultural heritage site in South Korea and some of its buildings are used as cultural spaces.

Fireworks

Every year from late August to early September, Incheon Electric Power Plant holds a traditional fireworks festival in collaboration with Incheon Metropolitan City. The festival lasts for two days and attracts numerous citizens and tourists.
